One-touch calling on a iPhone

Sometimes you might find it difficult to look for the person you want to call in your contacts, you can set up a one-touch calling shortcut, which allows you to call this person simply by tapping on the shortcut.

Unlock your phone, search and tap on the “Shortcuts” app. It has a dark blue background with 2 sideways diamonds on it.

If you can’t find it, swipe down and search for “Shortcuts.” Tap the app when it appears at the top of the screen.

Click on the blue '+' sign at the top to create a new shortcut.

Tap on the bar which says “Search Actions”.

Type "Call" in the search bar. It will show options to make calls from different apps, such as WhatsApp. Choose the one you want.

If you chose the regular phone call app, tap 'Call' with the green and white phone icon next to it, from the list.

Then, tap the word 'Contact' in blue to choose who you want to call.

Scroll through your contact list or use the search bar to find the person. Then tap their name to select them.

Then, tap the small down arrow in the grey circle in the top middle of the screen next to 'Call'.

Tap 'Rename' on the list that pops up.

Give your shortcut a simple name, like 'Call Jane' and then click 'Done' at the bottom of the screen.

The shortcut is now set. To add it to your home screen, tap on the three dots on your new shortcut tile.

Then, tap the share icon at the bottom of the screen. It's a square with an arrow pointing up.

Tap on 'Add to Home Screen'. You may need to scroll to find this option.

You can now choose the icon of this shortcut, a symbol or a photo.

If you want to add a photo, tap the grey square that looks like a picture frame. Then tap 'Take Photo' to take a picture with your phone.

If you choose to select a picture in your phone's gallery, tap on 'Choose Photo'. Find the picture and tap on it.

You can now crop the picture as you like. When you are done, tap on “Choose” at the bottom right corner.

When you are done, tap on the “Add” button on the top right corner.

You will then be able to see the shortcut on your home screen. To call the person you selected, simply tap the shortcut and confirm by tapping 'Yes' in the pop-up window.

Her work has given her a real understanding of the challenges people face when learning new skills later in life, and she enjoys finding simple, practical ways to make technology feel less daunting.

She has created and delivered workshops on topics such as smartphone use, online safety, and everyday digital tools, always adapting her approach to suit different abilities and learning styles. Charley joined JC Explore in 2024, bringing with her a patient, approachable teaching style and a passion for making technology accessible to everyone.

Max Bianconi

Max has worked in the health and social care setting for the past twenty years, gaining extensive experience in supporting individuals and groups in residential and community settings across various roles.
Currently, Max manages JC Explore, a service that provides digital skills training for everyday life using mainstream and assistive technology. In addition to his role, Max serves as a trustee at the Karten Network, a charity dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and independence of adults with congenital or acquired physical, cognitive, sensory, learning disabilities, or mental health issues through a network of IT centres.
Max is passionate about assistive technology and its impact on people’s lives. He believes that promoting independence and social inclusion leads individuals to a more meaningful life.
