Join us at Nightingale Hammerson for a powerful literary event celebrating the launch of two remarkable books:

Two Sisters by Rosie Whitehouse and Ninette’s War by John Jay

These deeply personal true stories shine a light on extraordinary Jewish women who survived, resisted and demonstrated immense moral courage under Nazi occupation in France.

Rosie Whitehouse’s relative was a codebreaker at Bletchley Park and Ninette Montagu (Lady Swaythling) is the subject of John Jay’s book. Both lived out their last months at Nightingale House. This event will therefore hold special significance to the Nightingale Hammerson family.

What to Expect:

  • Thoughtful discussion with the authors
  • Readings from their books
  • Insights into survival, resistance and remembrance
  • Reflections on why these stories resonate today
  • A chance to meet the authors.

Afternoon tea will be served

About the Books

Two Sisters

A moving story of Marion and Huguette Müller, two Jewish sisters who escaped Vichy France. Rosie Whitehouse uncovers their journey and explores the role of rescuers, betrayal, and the lasting impact of trauma and memory.

Two Sisters is a brilliant meditation on family and trauma across generations, a much-needed critical reappraisal of the Jewish experience in France during the Holocaust…” – James McAuley, Author of The House of Fragile Things

Ninette’s War

John Jay tells the story of Ninette Dreyfus, later Lady Swaythling, who evaded deportation by adopting a new identity. A tale of survival, reinvention, and resilience in the face of antisemitism.

“At a time when Jews are freshly embattled and the taboo against antisemitism dissolves … Ninette’s War provides urgent context and details we must not forget, alongside a compassionate, elegant tribute to one brave woman’s life in time.” – Zoe Strimpel, Sunday Telegraph Columnist
