The report reveals a care system that is fragmented, underfunded, and difficult to navigate, leaving many people with dementia and their families unsupported.
Key Findings:
💚 1 in 3 people wait over a year for a formal dementia diagnosis
💚 Memory clinic wait times can exceed 2 years
💚 72% received no signposting to support while waiting for a diagnosis
💚 Only 28% found post-diagnosis support helpful
💚 82% of residential care workers have supported diagnostic processes
Recommendations: To transform the dementia care pathway, we are calling for:
✅ National Diagnostic Pathway Standards
✅ A Dementia Accountability Framework
✅ A “Waiting Well” Support Scheme
✅ Workforce Education Funding
✅ Dementia Leads in every GP surgery
With the right structures in place, we can build a system that offers not just diagnosis, but hope, support and dignity for every person affected by dementia.
With special acknowledgment to Thessa Verwolf (Relationship Centred Care Coordinator, Nightingale Hammerson) for her contribution.
