Hearing loss in Care Homes

Hearing loss affects at least 18 million people in the UK and at least 80% of people over the age of 70 experience hearing loss (RNID 2024).

Nearly 400,000 people live in care homes in England at any one time and around 70% of care home residents have dementia. The vast majority are living with both hearing loss and dementia. Unmanaged hearing loss can have very negative consequences in people’s lives that include: increasing the risk of developing dementia, increased risk of falls, social isolation, mental wellbeing and much more… But we can support people living with hearing loss to live better if we put in place some multifactorial interventions to improve the care home environment, increase the knowledge of team members and providing access to audiological services.

The paper ‘Hearing Loss in Care Homes – a Call to Action’, developed in partnership between Engage, Reach by Nightingale Hammerson and Care England outlines problems and solutions to best support the thousands of people living with hearing loss.
