Meet Samantha

24 Apr 2025

This year marks a personal milestone for me—my very first marathon. I’m filled with excitement and anticipation as I prepare for the big day. My journey as a runner began during the Covid lockdown, with Couch to 5K. I really enjoyed it and from there, I committed to a fitness plan that gradually built up my strength and endurance. Taking on a marathon is a huge leap, but it felt like a natural next step to me —I like a challenge!

In March 2022, I ran a 10K race in Richmond—a major goal at the time. While training for it, I realised that I was ready for an even bigger challenge. That’s when the idea of running a marathon truly took hold.

This marathon means more to me than just a personal achievement. I’m running in support of Nightingale Hammerson, a charity close to my heart. My father has been a Resident in the Pat Household at Hammerson House since December 2023. Seeing the specialised, compassionate care he receives every day has been deeply moving and reassuring. Whether Residents are living with dementia or facing physical challenges, the care teams at Hammerson House provide support with an incredible level of professionalism, warmth and dignity. We are fortunate to have such high-quality care in our community.

Running for Nightingale Hammerson gives this challenge even greater meaning. When the going gets tough, I’ll be thinking of my lovely dad, the dedicated care teams, and all the Residents who benefit from this vital service—especially those who wouldn’t be able to afford care without financial support from the charity. Every donation helps to ensure that more people continue to live in comfort, with dignity and respect.

The carers at Hammerson House have  taken the time to truly get to know my dad. Their attention, patience and kindness never go unnoticed. It’s a demanding job, but they carry it out with grace, patience and compassion.

My original fundraising goal was £2,500. Thanks to the generosity of friends, family and supporters, I’ve now raised almost £7000. I feel incredibly emotional and grateful to have reached this point. Completing the marathon is a huge personal goal, but knowing it’s helping to support Nightingale Hammerson makes it all the more rewarding.
