Dementia Café Launches at Hammerson House

14 May 2026

A welcome monthly initiative launched in April at Hammerson House, led by Joanna, Engagement Lead on Audrey and Pat households. The Dementia Café was created for relatives of Residents living with dementia. The aim is to provide a warm, supportive and engaging space where families can share experiences, learn more about dementia and explore ways to support their loved ones throughout their journey.

Joanna created a beautiful and welcoming environment where relatives could sit together, enjoy tea and cake and openly share their experiences in a safe space. The intention was to help families feel relaxed, supported and at home whilst navigating the challenges that arise when a loved one is living with dementia.

During the session, relatives were provided with guidance on supporting a loved one, alongside leaflets featuring helpful websites, support services and carer resources.

The session provided a warm and safe space for relatives to learn about dementia and to discuss their feelings,” Joanna said. “I was touched by the responses I received and by how supported and cared for relatives felt.”

The Dementia Café offers relatives a platform where they can share their needs and an opportunity to shape future discussions. Topics suggested for upcoming meetings include how to engage with people at different stages of dementia and how to adapt to their changing needs and abilities.

The feedback from relatives was both positive and deeply moving.

I found it very useful (and emotional).  I’m interested in anything that will help me understand how to relate to my mother and how to ensure that we are doing the best for her.”

“Thanks very much for arranging yesterday’s meeting, it was so appreciated by everyone. We never stop learning. Sharing experiences is a relaxing and least harsh way to face the future. Thank you and your team for everything you all do for the Residents and their families.”

The next Dementia Café will take place at the beginning of June.
